With a magical 7-iron shot on the eighth hole at Desert Pines in Las Vegas, Laura Walsh set the highlight standard at maximum height Monday, while grabbing a share of the lead after the first round of the JDP Invitational.

Walsh, known as Lil L’Dub, fired the 113-yard shot into the hole for her first career ace. It was her second eagle of the day, which happened to be her 32nd birthday. 

“I didn’t even know the yardage for sure, but I thought (7-iron) was good enough,” Walsh said. “Nice and straight and it went in.”

The mother-to-be also eagled the par-5 third hole.

“That was probably more magical than the hole-in-one,” Said Walsh, who is due to give birth to her first child in September. “Because I had to hit three perfect shots.”

Walsh crushed a drive, then launched a towering 5-hybrid to within about 10-feet of the third hole, then drained a putt with several inches of break to secure the first eagle. Walsh finished with a 95 on the par-71 layout, putting her in a tie for the lead with a net +5.

Also sitting at +5 are Jeremy “The Scribe” Peters and Debbie “The Diva” Peters, who both opted for the automatic “plus five” rule, which allowed any player to take a score of +5 in the first round without having to hit a golf shot. All players must play round two and three.

Opting to chance it and take their real scores in the first round were John “Ahab” Peters and Sean “El Capitan” Walsh. Both finished at +9 and sit four shots out of the lead with 36-holes to play.

Two eagles in one round will definitely help put Lil L’Dub on track to win her first JDP, but she knows the outcome is far from being decided.

“I was hoping for a better lead, especially with two eagles,” she said. “Sounds like Debbie is right up there on her game. She’s probably the one in the hunt the most.”

The JDP continues Wednesday at The Palms in Mesquite, Nevada.
