A little early July golf update

Chris Daigrepont is a really long hitter. While playing the black tees at the Creek last month with Daigrepont, I watched him drive the ball nearly into the fairway bunkers at the 18th hole’s division point. We measured the drive with lasers and came to consensus that he hit the ball 334 yards. It was the most impressive drive I have witnessed on that hole.

Black bears are running rampant this summer. With numerous killings by black bear in the news and many black bears seen on our golf courses, golfers are on high alert. During one nine-hole round at Anchorage Golf Course, one of the course marshals was nice enough to follow my group around for nearly the entire round, keeping his cart between us and a bear, which was roaming in the trees nearby with a cub.

As for a course condition update, we’ve reached July and all the courses are starting to take shape. Settlers Bay’s greens are still the best, with nearly zero patches of dead grass to putt over. The front nine at the Moose Run Hill course may be the worst. They are so bumpy and patchy, you almost can’t putt. The back nine at the Hill is much better. The rest of the courses are somewhere in between. The Creek gets my vote for best fairways from which to strike a golf ball.
