Finding the bottom

It was one of those rare occasions in which Rob Nelson decided to tell us a story. His monologue pertained to the time he met Vijay Singh at a fancy driving range where pros hang out and practice.

If Rob sees this post, maybe he can expand on what Vijay told him and correct anything I get wrong here, but the story goes: Rob went to Vijay and asked him how he hits so many golf balls at the driving range without getting worn out. Vijay turned to his new friend and laughed, telling Rob the media likes to make it sound like he is out there exhausting himself with thousands of full shots a day, but it isn’t really true.

He sits out there making little half swings, Vijay said, maybe taking a 7-iron and sweeping the ball out there about 100 yards, just trying to find the bottom. Presumably this last phrase meant finding the bottom of the swing arc, which one would imagine is pretty important. If the golf swing is essentially a circular motion of sorts, then meeting the ball at the bottom of the circle would seem ideal.

If a pro like Vijay spends hours finding the bottom of his swing, it must be hard to find and begs one to question where the bottom of their own swing is. How do you find it? Is it different for everyone?

Maybe Rob will see this and leave a comment with his professional thoughts. Of course anyone with some amateur thoughts is welcome to leave those as well.
