The Fork

The 17th hole at the Moose Run Hill course might be one of the best in Alaska, especially for match-play purposes. The par-4 has a challenging green with lots of twisting slopes that make it tough to read any putt. The green is accessible from any distance, as there are no hazards. From the tee, you have numerous options, so I’ll call it the Fork.

Think fork in the road or stick a fork in me, I’m done. The Fork will force you to stand on the tee and determine whether to cut the corner of the dogleg left and gain a considerable distance advantage, or play the conventional shot down the middle of the fairway.

This is like a four-pronged fork, however, as every option in between is also presented. You can cut the corner a little or a lot. You can lay up way back and attack the green from 200 out if you want and that’s not a bad play, as far as the green is concerned. A running long-iron or hybrid into the green plays nicely, sometimes better than a high-flying dart of a shot.

The Fork is a great hole that allows you to be as aggressive or cautious as you like. You can just play your game.
