Seventh month brings seventh heaven

An uneventful June gives way to a beautiful July here in Alaska. Weather has kept me away from the golf course for most of the sixth month, that and a limited schedule, but July could be better, if 70 degrees and sun we’ve had the last two days means anything.

I did a little golf competition experiment in June, inviting Rich Teders, Sean Walsh and Todd Santangelo to join me in posting scores on the Grint on our own schedule. The lowest two scores posted will play each other in a match in about a week, with the other two contenders playing a match as well. The winner of each match will receive a unique prize.

Teders, who won the state match play title last summer, led the pack with a 68 at Palmer. Walsh took second with a 71 at Palmer. Santangelo was third with a 77 at Anchorage Golf Course. My 84 at AGC on the final day of the month secured last place.

So, that means Teders will play Walsh and Peters will play Santangelo. The plan is to have the matches at AGC, which is the course in the best condition so far.

If all goes well, I will likely try to do one more similar style of competition before summer ends, which doesn’t give Alaskans much time. I’ve mentioned this to a few more friends and interest is there. My goal is to create more competition within our casual rounds that we play on our own time, instead of reserving competition for just scheduled tournaments It’s still a big experiment at this point, intended to lay ground work for coming years.
