The AGB Legends tournament is the start of a new tradition

The idea behind the AGB Legends tournament, which takes place Saturday at Anchorage Golf Course, is to create an annual event on Memorial Day Weekend featuring Alaskan golfers who possessed high levels of skill over many years of play within the state.

The tournament is invitation only. Longevity is a key component, so youngsters will have a difficult time getting invitations in the future, however, extremely consistent, impressive play can make one a legend at a relatively early age. A legendary Alaskan golfer is basically the kind of golfer everyone in the community knows. Their names and scores are the first ones looked up in tournaments and their faces are easily recognizable when they arrive at the site of competition. There will be no defined set of rules for gaining an invitation, such as number of victories. When one is a legend, it is obvious.

Your 2018 legends are: Rob Nelson, Greg Sanders, Adam Baxter, Benjie Sumulong and Rich Teders. The one who shoots the lowest score Saturday will win a dozen Pro V1 golf balls with “I am the AGB Legend” printed on them. The golf ball number will be No. 18 in representation of the year. The winner can put the golf balls in play or keep them on a trophy case.

Holding a Legends tournament each year will hopefully provide a goal for younger golfers, a goal of being recognized for their steady pursuit of golfing greatness in Alaska. It will also provide spectators a chance to see how the legends are performing early in the golf season.
