First Legends tournament results in a two-shot swing at final hole

Rob Nelson, like a good legendary golfer should, canned a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole Saturday at Anchorage Golf Course to shoot an even-par 72.

“I knew it had to go in,” said Nelson, who hammered the putt home with an aggressive pace over a slow putting surface.

Nelson knew he needed to make that putt, because he knew fellow legend Adam Baxter, made the turn at 1-under par. Nelson figured Baxter, who was playing in the group ahead of him, would likely not shoot worse than one over par on the back nine.

Nelson didn’t know Baxter had still been 1-under par on the 18th tee, but a drive into the trees led to a bogey for Baxter and ultimately a two-shot swing on the final hole in the first AGB Legends tournament.

Instead of going to a playoff of some sort, it was decided there would be co-Legend champions, with Baxter and Nelson getting two sleeves apiece of the Legend golf balls.

The five legends competing shot as follows from the blue tees at Anchorage Golf Course:

Rob Nelson, Adam Baxter – 72

Greg Sanders – 76

Benjie Sumulong – 78

Rich Teders – 81
