There’s a new sheriff in town

There was something about the way the eagle chip went in the hole at the par-5 ninth that indicated it was a special day, or maybe it was the way Benjie Sumulong walked in several putts on the front nine.

Though Sumulong missed a six-foot par putt at 18, he still shot 70 at Anchorage Golf Course on Saturday in the AGB Open, making him the new No. 1 golfer in the AGB rankings.

Sumulong was his usual steady self off the tee and his usual sharp self with the wedges, but it was his touch on and around the greens that made the round impressive. He made three birdies to go with his eagle at nine, draining those putts at five, seven and 17.

Sumulong will be around until late September, so you have until then to throw out a challenge.
