An amazing moment at the AVO

A wise man once said life has its moments, and I had one of those today at the third hole on the Moose Run Hill Course, as part of the lead group in the Arctic Valley Open.

After driving into the left trees at No. 3 and playing a wicked hook to get back in play, 20 yards short of the green, I chipped in for birdie. The coolest thing about that moment was the lack of expectation involved. I was just trying to chip the ball up toward the middle of the green and let the ball cruise hard toward the right flag placement on the severely sloped green. The ball curled and curled and dropped and I dropped my club and joked that I was heading in for the day to drink in the clubhouse.

As it turns out, I should have. I finished with an 88, despite feeling like I swung the club pretty well. There are a lot of weird ways to add strokes to a score and I found a few new ones today. Ultimately, golf is game of touch and feel and if you don’t have it, you are doomed.

My story will no doubt be similar to others out there today, which begs the question: Why do we torture ourselves with tournament golf when we aren’t prepared for it? The answer is of course, so we can have those moments.
