The appetizer

The first hole at Anchorage Golf Course is short, simple and a respectable indicator of what you will encounter on a trip around the 18 holes, so I’ll call it the appetizer. It’s not enough to satisfy your hunger and you won’t talk much about to friends, but it will get you ready for a round.

There is no bend in the first fairway. Straight away is the ideal line. There is a bunker on the right side of the fairway, a bunker you probably want to avoid, but you are not doomed if it catches your ball.

For big hitters, the green is driveable, and if you are hitting your driver well, there is no reason not to hit driver. The green has bunkers on the right and left, but they only come into play on poor shots. Most of the time, you barely notice those bunkers are there. The green is large and relatively flat. Technically, it has two tiers, but the dividing slope between the tiers is minimal.

The only thing that can leave a sour taste in your mouth at No. 1 is a crooked shot. Like most holes at AGC, if you spray a shot into the trees, you’ll be sorry. So, unleash your best straight ball and you will probably make birdie and head to No. 2 at one-under.
